March 2010 - Greens help save Swimming Pool

The outdoor swimming pool in Beccles is almost saved thanks to the work of Green Party Councillor Graham Elliott. Since being elected to Waveney District Council in 2007 Graham has campaigned tirelessly for the open-air pool and has supported a community based group in their bid to take over the facility.

Beccles Lido Limited, a company limited by guarantee and a registered charity, was formed specifically to take over the ownership and management of the pool. Despite facing the challenges caused by a decade or more of neglect and lack of investment by the Council, the community group is well on its way to re-opening the pool.

Graham Elliott said “outdoor swimming is healthy and natural yet pools around the country are closing every year. It is vital for both young and old that we get this unique facility re-opened. It is important for local people and for visitors alike and will bring in people to the town to enjoy an increasingly rare facility. The pool site has already had many hundreds of hours of volunteer work to try and repair damage and to make the site more attractive".
