Unitary move, challenges democracy

Democracy under threat in Green strong hold!

In a shocking attempt to power grab in Norfolk and Suffolk the Conservatives are trying to cancel elections in certain areas this May. The Greens are major players in Norwich, Babergh, Mid-Suffolk, East Suffolk and South Norfolk.  In the May elections it is expected that the Greens would make huge gains following election success in the 2023 District elections.

At yesterday’s full council meeting in Suffolk our councillors made strong representations not to cancel elections in May and allow communities to be heard through a thorough consultation process. Cllr Annette Dunning (pictured) said: “Let’s be clear about what is being presented today, it is the Labour governments vision for local government reform, and the Conservative administration’s rush to make a decision, one that may very well not be the vision of the vast majority of Suffolk residents” (https://youtu.be/GCu-POsUMjY?t=7657)

Large unitary councils may not be appropriate for rural areas, smaller district councils often have a good understanding of local issues and district councillors are often incredible advocates for a community.

Eye witness account from member Clare Higson who attended and helped organised the Suffolk protest;

“It truly was a ‘perfect day for an execution although I was unprepared for just how much of massacre [of democracy] I was to witness in the Chamber. The fun bits; meeting old and new Greens and being instantly reminded why I bother; being part of a Green crew photo; watching the expression on the Reform activist faces when they saw our flyer; being there however briefly to show solidarity to the long serving stars of Suffolk’s Green Revolution.”
