Halesworth Greens

Halesworth is Green. Halesworth’s two District Councillors Beth Keys-Holloway, Geoff Wakeling were elected May 2023 to join and Halesworth’s County Councillor, Annette Dunning (elected May 2021).

The moment of election declared

Geoff runs a regenerative farm in Bramfield. Brimwood Farm focuses on rare breed pigs and sheep along with a market vegetable garden across the 37 acre site first farmed by his great grandfather.

Geoff says ‘I think the time has come for a political change, and I’d be excited to work hard for the people of Halesworth and surrounding villages as a District Councillor‘.

Beth works with community groups and young people, building their confidence through theatre. She is a Holton resident, parent of two children at a local school and local gardener.

Currently Beth is the Drama Mentor for the James Holloway Youth Arts Fund, based at the Cut in Halesworth. This is an exciting new arts project: a free mentorship scheme for young and talented Actors, Musicians, Dancers, Artists that offers an opportunity to work with guidance from professionals.

The Halesworth Greens ‘patch’ includes the town of Halesworth and the surrounding villages of Blyford, Brampton with Stoven, Frostenden, Holton, Sotherton, Spexhall, Uggeshall, Wangford with Henham, Westhall, Wissett, and Wrentham.

We achieved results through getting Annette, our first Green County Councillor, elected in 2021, and by working hard to cement the Green presence still further at the forthcoming District Elections in 2023.

Our work in the community

We are involved in many community-based activities and collaborations, including:

  • working with Edgar Sewter Primary school on the Halesworth TerraCycle recycling group (in pre-COVID days)
  • we helped to set up the monthly Repair Café at Halesworth Library
  • we hold regular Green Drinks and wider gatherings to share and develop ideas for improving our patch of Suffolk, whether through political or community-based action.
  • Our 2022 Himalayan Balsam pull grew out of one of these Green Drinks – inspired by Aubry, we set to in record time before the seeds began to jetison.
A gathering of Halesworth Greens in the Wood October 2021 – well wrapped up!

We win elections

Four 4 years ago at the East Suffolk District Council election we were celebrating taking all the 3 district council seats in Beccles, and Suffolk Coastal Greens 1 seat in Melton. Today we are the largest party in East Suffolk with 16 seats.

After coming close to winning a district seat in 2019, with Annette Dunning standing we won our first Green Suffolk County Council seat in 2021 by a substantial majority, and are now part of the official opposition.

Chart showing elections results for Suffolk County Council Halesworth Ward 2021. Votes by candidate were as follows - Annette Dunning, Green Party, 1546, Tony Goldson, Conservative, 1287, Peter Coghill, Labour 254
Sarah Hunt, Liberal Democrat	84
